Temporary License issued to Huawei

The United States has eased some of its ban on Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei. It will be a measure to reduce the impact of halting full-scale dealings with Huawei.

The US Department of Commerce issued a "temporary general license" allowing Huawei to purchase US manufactured goods for a limited period of time on Tuesday (local time). It is a grace period to allow updates to the existing network and product software.

The temporary general license approves the activities required for an existing network and mobile service operations. And cybersecurity research needed to keep communication smooth. However, we do not approve all transactions. Export Control Regulations (EAR) Transactions involving the export and re-export of goods subject to the EAR require the issuance of a special license by the authorities. The Commerce Department will review whether to extend the measure after 90 days.

The Department of Commerce has allowed some parts supply to Huawei after the announcement of the transaction restrictions, in order to minimize the impact of prohibition orders. It is a self-help measure to protect the industry.

Earlier, Google discontinued its hardware and software products, excluding Huawei and its open source licensed products. Major US semiconductor companies such as Intel, Qualcomm, Xilinx, and Broadcom also announced to their executives that they will not supply products to Huawei until further notice. Huawei has not been able to use US software and semiconductors to make smartphones.

This follows President Donald Trump's last 15 days signing an executive order to protect information technology and service providers. Trump's executive orders have effectively shut down US IT companies' dealings with Huawei, the Commerce Department said on Thursday, adding 68 affiliates to Huawei and Huawei.

Meanwhile, US companies that have supplied equipment to Huawei are unlikely to be hit hard enough. That's why it is unlikely that US trade restrictions will be long-lasting. So, that's good news for Huawei Mobile Fans.
